Review: Amon Tobin, DJ P-Love, And Prefuse 73 at Bimbo's 365 Club 10.28.02
by travis lodolce
'Twas fun. We began in Berkeley at Amoeba, grabbed a bite to eat then proceeded to the city where our 3-sum became a 4-sum. Some excellent "parking karma" later we jaunted into first place in a short line. Finally inside, I unleashed a massive urination-fest which lead to me not gaining a free XLR8 magazine. Two minutes later some members of our expedition went down the block to purchase cheaper alcohol and sneak it inside. I did not drink, however, as I was the designated backseat driver. Mrs. Bling Rhames was in the house with some home women. It's always fun to see familiar faces. Prefuse 73 was already spinning upon enter so it was immediate enjoyment. DJ P Love followed. While his mic skills were what one could expect from a DJ, he more than made up for that lacking factor by bumping the new Justin Timberlake joint. Amon Tobin ended the evening with a lenghty set. The crowd was dense, especially for a Monday night, but also of little movement, maybe what one would expect from a Monday night. Although it's excellent to listen to spectaular mixers and DJs, an Amon Tobin show is kind of what I excepted. A lot of listening and steady playing due to the fact he's not known for the scratchity scratch scratching. By the end however, just before the midnight hour, the crowd broke down and shuffled to the beat. The night could have ended there, with a quick trip home, but was lengthened by unforseen occurances which led to a very late night of driving and waiting. Still, 'twas fun.
