![]() Crib Remnant (True Classical CDs) by Derek Sawyer Devin Sarno's new concept record is sacred music for city dwellers. The electric bassist's haunting Remnant mixes atmospheric low-end with field recordings of speeding locomotives -- familiar sounds snagged off of streets near the urban Los Angeles neighborhood that Sarno grew up in. The soundtrack to a friend's short film complements two lengthy ambient meditations on dreams and memory, where the ghosts of free jazz past are invoked to help produce order out of chaotic improvisation. Sarno makes his four-string sound like a chorus of vintage synths, whereby layers of Eno-esque tension are left to drone on unresolved. Those deep frequencies are effectively accented with the subtle strings of longtime collaborators like Petra Haden and Nels Cline (on violin and guitar, respectively). Ironically, for all its complexity, this is actually pretty accessible stuff. It's contemporary classical music with an indie rock sensibility and will find fans in folks who grew up digging noise bands but are looking for something a bit more beautiful to trip out on in adulthood. |
