Review: "Maid in Manhattan" Trailer by Guy Branum These trailers are amazingly sepia. I haven't seen that much sepia since "Autumn in New York". As it's an autumn release picture set in New York, the coincidence may be more than coincidental, but I'm going to press that the reason is because Director Wayne Wang, like AINY director Joan Chen, is a woman. This theory is supported by a) the fact that Wayne Wang directed the Joy Luck Club, which made me menstruate, and b) fellow woman Barbara's directorial efforts have all included similarly autumnal earth tones. (Please re-screen "The Mirror has Two Faces" and note the wholesale absence of the color blue.) But, frankly, this palate suits my skin tone, so I approve. To the trailer's credit, it is set to Diana Ross's "I'm Coming Out", which kind of telegraphs the big reveal where JLo tearfully explains to Ralph Feinnes that she is a pre-op tranny. However, it's a very good song, and gives me ample opportunity to reminisce about the Retro Disco craze of the later-mid-90's, so again, I approve. Despite the colors and music, I was still torn about whether I could give this trailer a positive review, but then two facts completely bowled me over: Jenny's Bigfatass and the film's general lack of plot. I am strikingly pro-bigfatass, and by putting scenes from the unavoidable trying-on-pretty-dresses musical montage in the trailer, Sony Pictures had me at hello. I also eventually realized that Maid in Manhattan is simply "Pretty Woman", but lacking a level of abstraction. I find this trend in movies to be offensive, but delightful in trailers. It reached its apex when the "Miss Congeniality" trailer trailered all pertinent plot points from the film. In a trailer, I just want a simple story about the love between a man and a round, thick onion. My only real reservation about this trailer was that I briefly thought it was for a film version of the short-lived sitcom "We've Got it Maid", which, in depicting the seduction of a woman employed in the service industries by her employer, was grossly sexist and inappropriate. |
