Review: Buying Records Cheap by quarterbar One of the great things about buying records is that you can get great and/or rare stuff for cheap. You can find most things for under $5 or so, if you're patient and look in the right places. It's a great way to introduce yourself to new music without spending tons of money. Lots of stuff was never re-released on CD, so a record is the only way to hear it. There are tons of drawbacks too. It's hard to find what you want, you have to check for scratches and warping, you gotta dig around in the dust, it's hard to avoid the lame "collectors" and "dealers", and records are harder to store than CDs. Still, I think it's worth it. I made a list of some of my favorite records I've gotten for under $5.
Kraftwerk - Exceller 8 - Vertigo A 1974 compilation of some of Kraftwerk's early stuff. They range from prog rock to minimalist noise to dance music. It's amazing how ahead of their time they were. Good stuff. $1 Clive Stevens - Atmoshere - Capitol Really solid Jazz-Rock album. Billy Cobham on drums. Seems like each song turns into some amazing headnodding groove. Never heard of this Clive Stevens guy before. $4 John Cale - Fear - Island He played in The Velvet Underground. This is one of my favorite albums. Each song is worthy of being on a mixtape. No filler whatsoever. The tunes are piano and guitar-driven and they match Cale's sincere lyrics well. "Ship of fools" and "You know more than I know" are classics. "Barracuda" has a nice little drumbreak too. $1 Toots and the Maytals - Funky Kingston - Island Classic reggae album. All good songs. The kind of record you put on and leave on. $1 Budgie - Bandolier - A&M Great early 70s hard rock band. Some really amazing guitar work on strangely arranged songs. $1
Mashmakhan - S/T - Epic Kinda hard to describe. Loud and rockin' with frequent organ and guitar breaks. All the instruments sound really great. Black Sheep sampled "I Know I've Been Wrong" for their classic jam "Gimme the Finga". $2 Morton Subotnick - Silver Apples of the Moon - Nonesuch "One of the premier American electronic composers," says some website. Nothing but crazy electronic flourishes. $4 Eric Satie - The Electronic Spirit of... - Deram It's not actually satie playing (he died in the 20s), it's some orchestra. Lots of nice isolated ambient and not-so-ambient electonic sounds. All the songs are interspersed with english and french announcements of the pieces' titles. Plus, there are some really beautiful orchestral bits. $2 America - Harbor - Warner That's right, the big 70s smooth AM rock band who sing "A horse with no name" and "ventura highway". This record has a great if overused breakbeat on the song "slow down" and has some really pretty songs like "monster". $2 |
