The Eyes Have It by laser cub I'm happy to report that this site has had some recent visits from people in Japan, Spain, and Sweden. I welcome you, international readers, as these are three of my favorite countries. I'm also glad you're safely viewing this page from far away, because here in the United States, some of you might arouse suspicion. Let me explain. According to one of the news stations here, average Americans should look upon you, foreign person, as a potential terrorist. This station is known as "Fox News," and many Americans consider it the most fair and balanced source of information in this country. Today I was watching a Fox News program called DaySide With Linda Vester. Here is a picture of Linda Vester, who, as you will be careful to note, has blond hair and blue eyes.
Ms. Vester was talking to one of her guests, former FBI deputy assistant Danny Coulson, about the danger of terror attacks in this country. She asked him who we, as average Americans, should look out for as we try to identify and stop potential terrorists. She noted that Al Qaeda is reportedly trying to recruit people who are non-Muslim, even non-Middle Eastern, to act as terrorists, essentially saying, We know we should be suspicious of Muslims and Middle Easterners, but who else? In some corners of America, this is known as "racial profiling," or, more succinctly, "racism." But instead of chiding Ms. Vester for her bigotry, Mr. Coulson took the divisiveness a step further. He said Al Qaeda has been working to recruit Chechnyans because they look more like "us" -- or as he put it, people who are "blond-haired and blue-eyed." So there you have it, Japanese and Spanish readers. You, like other dark-eyed, dark-haired people, including American brunettes and blacks and Latinos and American Indians, do not look like "us." You look like potential terrorists, according to Ms. Vester and her FBI expert, and Fox News will be on the lookout for you. Of course this warning doesn't apply to any blond-haired, blue-eyed Swedes and Spaniards who may be reading. You can still visit this country without fear -- as long as you don't dye your hair or anything.
