The Jim Yoshii Pileup write songs that make you smile and cry, in no particular order. Performed live, their power to induce tears and laughter is inescapable. This can be attributed to the depth and emotion the band pours into their live sets. The volume doesn't hurt, either. I caught up with JYPU guitarist Noah Blumberg before he set out to Reno to kick off their short West Coast tour alongside The Wrens. The meeting was nothing less than synergistic...

Jamie: Hi Noah, thank you for taking the time for this exclusive lunchboxing interview.

Noah: My pleasure, Jamie. It feels good to discuss things with you.

J: Yeah, the feeling is mutual. Feels real good! That said, I hear you are setting out on a tour this week with your rock and roll band, Jim Yoshii Pileup. You getting pumped or what?

N: We are getting pumped for sure. The bass player, Frankie [Koeller], is getting a little scared, but not too bad. We're gonna have a great time. I think we have a strong set.

J: Tell me about your set. Rumor has it you are going to be playing a bunch of new songs... are the rumor mills spinning the truth?

N: These mills spin fine silken fabrics from giant spindles. We have many new songs to share and maybe we'll throw an older song out there too.

J: But just one? Can Frankie handle that?

N: Any more than one old song and we get cranky like a baby. Especially Frankie. But that's mostly a good thing. We're showing a new side... well... just new songs. We do what we want to do, when we want to do it.

J: I like your confidence. A lot.

N: Good! Thanks.

J: So tell me... are these new songs from any upcoming releases we should know about?

N: Yes, Jamie. They are. Immediately after this tour, Frankie and Ryan will begin recording Bass and Drums, respectively. Our friend Sean Porter has a studio in Whittier, CA where we will be recording 15 - 20 songs. From this group of songs, we will assemble an album. Hopefully this album will be out early next year. Absolutely Kosher Records will be releasing it. It is very exciting to me.

J: As it is for me, one of your biggest fans! You guys will be playing at least a few dates with The Wrens if I have been given correct information from the multiple, reputable sources I went to. Are you excited about sharing a bill with them? Would you consider yourself a fan of "their sound?"

N: You have received good information, Jame-Jame. The Wrens are a great band. Their latest record is tons of fun and the live show is supposed to be great as well. Our drummer Ryan has played with them a few times and can't say enough good things. I am surely a fan.

J: I'm sure that will create for a more positive dynamic, and better energy between the bands. Synergy, if you will.

N: Right you are. That's how it goes. It makes things more fun to have a nice general atmosphere back stage. And when a band is having fun on stage it's much more entertaining to watch.

J: Absolutely. So are there any particular dates on the tour you are looking forward to?

N: The Los Angeles show at The Knitting Factory should be great. We've never played there before and we always have fun in L.A.. Old friends come out to the show and there's lots of drinking.

J: I heard that Wham! used to be big advocates of Goldschlager. What's JYPU's drink of choice?

N: As a band, we enjoy bourbon. Jim Beam or Maker's Mark usually. Ryan likes Calistoga water with lemon.

J: So, if Ryan is the sober one, and Frankie is the fearful one... what does that make you?

N: I guess I'm the cheerleader. I like to feel like everything is going well. I'm not fearful, but maybe a little bashful.

J: So, "the bashful cheerleader." I love it!

N: ...in the butt.

J: Yes! Is that the same role you play in your other musical outfit, Meanest Man Contest?

N: Kind of... Eriksolo tends to be a little dramatic and pessimistic about our performances. Sometimes he needs a little motivational talk and I'm more than happy to provide that. I find that musical dynamos like Eriksolo and Frankie have trouble dealing with their talent. That can manifest itself in insecurities. There are trade-offs in life. That's just how it goes.

J: Apparently you should also be known as "The Philosopher," but maybe thats just me. By the way, you guys did a splendid, if short, set at the last lunchboxing New Expression show!

N: Thanks a lot. It was fun. A great night. Also, thanks for the money.

J: My pleasure. I hope you bought many burritos with it. Would you like to say anything else to the lunchboxing readership before you sail off to Reno this afternoon for the first night of touring?

N: Yes please. They say most men live lives of quiet desperation. Don't let that happen to you.

J: Thank you, Noah.

N: Thanks 2 u 2!
