My Lucky Day
by jamie flam Thank you for watching the above film, "My Lucky Day," which I feel is aptly titled after a series of adventures that made the documented day indeed one of the luckier ones in my life. No, what you see wasn't in any way manipulated: I did in fact win free tickets on two separate California Lottery scratchers. And yes, the lucky streak continued when I succesfully drank from a cup, filled to the brim with water, and didn't let even one drop land on my new blouse. If that's not a lucky day worth documenting in film form, then I don't know what is. But I hope you will understand that, as a filmmaker, I did have to take certain liberties in order to make the story entertaining; liberties that don't necessarily reflect a completely accurate linearity of actual events. In order to keep my artistic integrity I want to show you, in list form, some of the innacuracies between the sequence of events in the film and the sequence of events in real life, at least before the nitpickers come out and expose me before an international audience, attempting to stain my reputation as a film director: 1. Both tickets were not purchased, nor were they scratched, on the same day. These events happened over a series of months. Thus you might conclude that calling the film "My Lucky Day," is grossly inappropriate. Trust me, I spent several hours* debating this very decision, but decided that "My Lucky Day" had a better ring than "Two Luckyish Days Over The Course Of Several Months," or even "My Lucky Month," and I just think the title plays an important role in defining a film, even if it's a vicious lie. 2. Mike Mott was not in fact in attendance at the time of either of the original scratchings. I think it is safe to say, however, that he showed the same enthusiasm at the time of filming, that he would have had, had he been there when I originally scratched the cards. This makes it ok. 3. At no point did any glitter-stars fly across the sky. Those were added at the editing stage of this film. They represent lost innocence. 4. I can't be totally sure that the incident in which I successfully drank water and avoided spilling occurred on the same day as one or both of the scratchings. In fact, I can't really recall even celebrating this "feat" at any point in my life, let alone celebrating it's correlation with the "feat" of winning free lottery scratchers. Still, it made for good watchin', eh? Thanks for listening. Now I think you have all the tools you need to really judge this film for what it is: a masterpiece. I'm sure you will all have different interpretations and different reactions. This is normal. For some people it will symbolize lost innocence. For others, innocence gained. As long as you recognize that it has something to do with innocence, than you have taken from the film what I sought to give: innocence. Thank you. *34 seconds |
