Movie Review: The Ring (First Half Hour)

by frankie koeller

It was a cold, dark, and expensive night at the movies. It was Halloween and I decided along with my girlfriend and a friend to go see the highly endorsed and acclaimed movie 'The Ring'. First things first, I love scary movies. I own The Shining and The Amityville Horror, both on DVD format. After watching ads for The Ring on television with actual video footage of movie goers being scared, I was convinced. I was excited to say the least. I live in Oakland, CA. so I had a few theater options. However, we decided to throw caution to the wind and venture into the suburbs of Orinda, CA. to avoid the rambunctious behavior that usually prevails in Oakland movie theaters. Everything was in its place for a wonderful and horrifying evening. And horrifying it was.

First of all we paid $9.50 for a ticket, and secondly the theater held about 25 people with a screen that resembled an 80's big screen TV, kind of blurry around the edges. Shortly after we sat down and had all taken a swig from the flask I brought in, came the parade of Levi's "painter style" jean wearing teenagers. I held my breath and hoped for a silent atmosphere so that I could really enjoy the movie. As the lights began to dim, the juveniles began their "conversation eruption". These kids had apparently never heard of the term "whispering". As a result, I really can't explain much of the movie. The parts I did catch were genuinely terrifying. After multiple "shhh's" and "shhhhhhhhh's", our comments turned from frustration to pure rage. "Shut the fuck up!" came out of one of us. I don't know who said it, but all it did was fan the flame. From the front row of laughing hyenas came the comment "...fuckin white people..". We were shocked and wanted our money back, and so we left.

In the lobby, all of us were dealing with a mixture of fear and rage and just wanted to wait outside for the youngsters so that we could teach them a lesson about respect. But we left and went home instead. I still want to go and see the rest of this movie.

So I give the first half hour of the movie 4 out of 5 stars.

I give the rambunctious teens a 1 out of 5 stars.

The old school movie screen gets a 2 out of 5 stars. It would have got a 1, but there was a bit of 80's style nostalgia to the 'big screen TV'.

The flask of whiskey gets a 5 out of 5 stars. Smooth.
