BONETON, ALASKA
Chapter One: Heavy Exposition
FADE IN:
INT. DOCTOR MARCUS GREGORY'S PENTHOUSE - MORNING
The morning's new light breaks through the window of DR. MARCUS GREGORY'S lavish
penthouse suite. Dr. Gregory, a ruggedly handsome, dark-featured, muscular man
in his mid-30's, stands next to his King size bed, shirtless, and buttoning
his pants. On the bed, intwined in burgundy and black silk sheets is MERIDETH
MONTCLAIR, 19, a gorgeous blonde with majestic green eyes.
As Dr. Gregory buttons his shirt, Merideth crawls across the bed and throws
her arms around him from behind.
MERIDETH
Oh, Marcus, last night was incredible. I've never felt anything like that
before.
DR. GREGORY
Merideth, you are a young woman, whereas I am an experienced man, not
to mention the Chief of Cardiology at Boneton General.
MERIDETH
I don't see what you being the the the Chief of Cardiology at one of the
most well-respected hospitals in the state of Alaska has to do with what
happens in the bedroom. |
Dr. Gregory turns and faces her and pulls her body into his.
DR. GREGORY
I'll tell what it means, Meredith Montclair.
(He kisses her)
It means I know my way around a woman's heart.
|
He releases her, and she curls up in a ball on the bed. He begins fixing his
tie.
MERIDETH
Oh, Marcus, I'm so worried.
DR. GREGORY
About what, Darling?
MERIDETH
If my mother finds out about us...I mean, she is your sister...and I just
don't know what she would do.
DR. GREGORY
(Adamantly)
Stepsister, Merideth. Your mother, Vanessa Douglas-Montclair, is not of
my blood. And she is dead to me. You know that.
MERIDETH
But, Uncle Mar... |
He shoots her an angry glare, interrupting her. He pulls on his suit jacket,
then affixes a shining platinum watch to his wrist.
MERIDETH (CONT'D)
I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I'm trying to get out of the habit. Maybe I should
just call you Doctor Gregory like everyone else.
DR. GREGORY
Whatever you choose to call me, my young love, I will answer you...as
long as it is coming from these sweet lips. |
The two smile and kiss again then hold one another.
DR. GREGORY (CONT'D)
Speaking of habits, aren't you due back at the convent?
MERIDETH
The sisters can wait if your patients can. |
She pulls him on top of her, and they begin kissing passionately among the
silk sheets on the King size bed.
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. DOUGLAS-MONTCLAIR MANSION - MORNING
VANESSA DOUGLAS-MONTCLAIR, a stunningly beautiful, immaculately dressed woman
in her early 30's, is talking on gold and pearl-handled telephone in the living
room of her immense and luxurious mansion.
VANESSA
Yes, Harold Spencer's office please. No, I will not hold, tell him it's
Vanessa Douglas-Montclair, and tell him it is urgent.
(beat)
Oh, Harry darling, I thought I'd find you at your desk. Now, tell me,
what is this I hear about Mitchell Stewart backing out of the interview?
Well that simply won't do. Harry, you promised me an exclusive with the
hottest actor to hit the industry since Russell Crowe, and I intend to
get it. Need I remind you that V Magazine has one of the highest circulations
in the Entertainment and Lifestyle publishing industry. I will not take
no for an answer. I don't care how, Harry, just make it happen. Goodbye
now. |
She hangs up the phone, and as she does this, CHARLENA, an older hispanic woman
in a maid's uniform makes her way into the living room holding a vase full of
red long stem roses. Vanessa looks at the flowers, then removes the attached
card and proceeds to read it aloud.
VANESSA
Dear Vanessa, Just wanted to say hello
and wish you well. Love, Your Big Sis, Veronica.
(beat)
How lovely. Throw them away. I mean, unless you want them.
CHARLENA
No Ma'am.
VANESSA
Very well. Is there anything else?
CHARLENA
Yes, Miss Vanessa. Mr. Seabrook phoned to say he was still very much looking
forward to dinner this evening.
VANESSA
Oh, did he? What am I saying? Of course he did!
(Laughs)
Thank you, Charlena. |
Charlena nods and walks out of the living room, leaving Vanessa by herself.
She picks up a letter opener and traces the edge of the blade with her fingertip.
VANESSA (CONT'D)
Oh, Mr. Seabrook. Yes, we shall have a delightful dinner. I shall drink
your wine and laugh at your witticisms. I shall cast longing glances in
your direction, and tell you I find you fascinating and remarkably handsome.
I will steal your heart, Winston Seabrook, and before long the entire
Seabrook Media Empire will belong to me. |
DISSOLVE TO:
EXT. ALLEY - MORNING
LIEUTENANT CRAIG DOUGLAS, a ruggedly handsome man in his mid 30's, and DETECTIVE
BENJAMIN TAYLOR, an alluring and very well-proportioned African American man
in his late 20's, sprint down an alley with their guns drawn. A young, unshaved
male PUSHER, with long oily hair retreats from them. He is dressed in ripped
up jeans and a flannel t-shirt.
BENJAMIN
Hold it right there, buddy, don't take another step.
LT. DOUGLAS
Stop, or we'll shoot! |
The fleeing criminal stops and puts his hands over his head. Lt. Douglas rushes
to him and slams him against a nearby dumpster. The two begin searching him.
PUSHER
You guy's got nothing on me, man. I was just going for a walk.
LT. DOUGLAS
Going for a walk, huh? You always go for a walk in the high school parking
lot? |
Benjamin reaches into the Pusher's flannel pocket, and removes a bottle.
BENJAMIN (CONT'D)
Uh oh, what have we got here?
PUSHER
Those are just antibiotics, man, I've got an ear infection. |
Benjamin tosses the bottle to Lt. Douglas.
LT. DOUGLAS
Ear infection, huh? Well, let's just see.
|
Lt. Douglas opens the bottle and pours several blue pills into his palm.
LT. DOUGLAS (CONT'D)
Well, I don't know what kind of ear infection you've got, buddy...but
these look an awful lot like Magic Blues to me. What do you think, Ben?
BENJAMIN
Sure look like Magic Blues to me, Lieutenant. But, maybe we're wrong,
how about we just watch this guy take this whole bottle of antibiotics
and we'll see what happens.
|
Lt. Douglas grabs the Pusher's head and makes as if he's going to force the
pills into his mouth. The Pusher jerks his head away.
PUSHER
Fine, fine, they're Magic Blues! Are you happy?
LT. DOUGLAS
Are we happy? Let me tell you who you're dealing with, scumbag. You're
dealing with Detective Benjamin Taylor and Lieutenant Craig Douglas of
the Boneton PD, and we won't be happy until every damn drug pushing lowlife
is behind bars. You got that? Or is that ear infection messing up your
hearing! |
Lt. Douglas cuffs the Pusher and pulls him away from the dumpster.
BENJAMIN
Officer Santos, come here please.
|
OFFICER MIGUEL SANTOS, a hispanic man in his early 20's, appears next to the
other officers.
SANTOS
Yes, sir?
BENJAMIN
I want you to take this perp down to the station, and book him on possession
with intent to distribute. We'll be there in a few hours.
SANTOS
Sure thing, Detective Taylor. |
Santos walks off-screen guiding the Pusher in front of him.
BENJAMIN
I thought we put the nail in this Magic Blues thing, Craig.
LT. DOUGLAS
Yeah, so did I.
(beat)
Are you thinking what I'm thinking.
BENJAMIN
More like "who" you are thinking.
LT. DOUGLAS AND BENJAMIN
Kristophe. |
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. DU MAL CASTLE - MORNING
KRISTOPHE DU MAL, 40, dressed impeccably in a gray suit, stands behind a full-sized
bar in an enormous den within his castle. He is fixing himself a drink
A door to the room opens, SHELLEY, and older Asian woman, dressed in maid's
attire shows WINSTON SEABROOK into the den. Seabrook is a silver-headed man
in his mid-50's, wearing a black suit and carrying a briefcase.
SHELLEY
Right this way, Mr. Seabrook.
SEABROOK
Thank you, dear.
|
Seabrook makes his way into the room, and Shelley leaves, closing the door
behind her.
KRISTOPHE
Winston, I'm so pleased you could join me this morning. Please, sit down. Can
I offer you a drink?
|
Seabrook has a seat on the sofa.
SEABROOK
No thank you, Kristophe, I never drink this early in the day.
KRISTOPHE
(Laughs)
I seldom start so late.
(beat)
So, tell me, Winston how is the media business these days?
SEABROOK
I have no complaints. And, how is the...what exactly it is that you do, du Mal?
KRISTOPHE
(Laughs)
Oh, you know, a little of this, a little of that.
(beat)
So it seems as though our little arrangement is in under way.
SEABROOK
Yes, yes it is. Things are going exceptionally well. In fact, we're
meeting again for dinner tonight.
KRISTOPHE
(Laughs)
Marvelous. I am very pleased. Vanessa Douglas-Montclair won't have any idea what hit her.
SEABROOK
She will be in for quite a shock. Her life, and the lives of everyone in Boneton,
Alaska, may never be the same.
KRISTOPHE
(Smiles)
If all goes as planned, that is.
SEABROOK
I've been wondering, Kristophe, what exactly are you getting out of this? I
mean, V Magazine is a major competitor of mine, so pulling the rug out from
under Vanessa Douglas-Montclair can potentially be very profitable for me. But,
why do "you" want her out of the picture?
|
As Seabrook asks this, Kristophe's look turns to one of vengeful anger. A close-up on his piercing gaze reveals that while one of his eyes is a deep brown color, the other is murky and gray. Kristophes face slowly shifts into a cold, menacing grin.
